I Know "No"

11.11.11

If thy brother wrongs thee, remember not so much his wrong-doing, but more than ever that he is thy brother.

~~ Epictetus, Greek Sage and Stoic Philosopher, 55 – 135 AD

My human, K, is under the impression that I don't understand the meaning of "no." And she has gathered some evidence, below, to illustrate her point. However, I understand "no" quite well. In fact, it was one of the first human commands I learned. However, as I have woofed before, being an Alpha Male of the Canine Species it is my prerogative to pick and choose which "no" I will understand and respond too.

I don't know what you are talking about. I don't see any hole.

Oh, this? It's not a hole, it is a paw rest.

I think I will just squeeze myself right in.

Ah! The bullpen. At last!

So much cow dung, so little time.

Great view!

What?

~~ MOMENT OF BEAUTY ~~

Raphael, School of Athens [Scuola di Atene], circa 1510-1511 (Apostolic Palace, Vatican City, Italy)

Giovanni di Paolo, The First Circle of Wisdom Led By Thomas Aquinas, Illustration of Dante's Paradiso, Canto X, circa 1442-1450 (The British Museum, London, England)

Back to me...

Submission to one wrong brings on another.

~~ Latin Proverb

Silvius, this is awesome! You really should join me.

What? Don't move my left paw?

Great view!

I'm done here.

Right where I left it!

I protest! I find the above so-called "evidence" to be highly and unfairly prejudicial! And extremely one-sided. I know "no," I just don't always act on that knowing. It is my prerogative and privilege and right, and, dare I woof, my duty, as a Canine to not always follow human rules. Unless treats are involved. Then I will always chose to follow the "no" command. I'm just sayin'...

Suka, only very stupid dogs obey 'no' commands when there are no treats involved!

I know, I know. They just don't get it. We love to squeeze into place and create a little rest for our paws too. What's wrong with these people?!!?

Woof! Woof! I totally agree with you ... TREATS got to be involved. As I aged ... I developed a "selective hearing" I don't understand the command NO. Happy "Moment of Beauty" Friday Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

Oh Suka, I always love your posts - the paintings, the quotes, and the adorable pictures of you!

My mom says I have selective hearing - I hear no when I want to and other times not so much.

Your pal, Pip

Selective hearing is one very important Siberian trait - it helps make us who we are:)

Hi, Suka. Nice to meet you. I have to say I agree with your selective understanding of the word "no." My human sisters have taught me well that sometimes it is beneficial to obey Mommy, and sometimes it's just not worth giving up what you want. One of those "pick your battle" things.

You present a sound and logical argument. KNOWING the word doesn't require you to agree with or acknowledge its power. Just be safe and smart when you chose to slip your collar and go wandering.

Here! Here! Suka. You got that right - it is our duty as canines to not always follow human rules, and for being only 1 1/2 years old...I am very proud to say that I am following mighty fine in your footsteps. Me....too...unless of course 'treats' are involved!!!

Thanks for your comments on todays blog. Momma just finished reading Raven Stole the Moon to us. It revolves aroung NW Coast Indian spirit lore and they believe, like you so rightly point out, that spirits (or nature) are neither "Good" or "evil" they just are. Raven gave humans the sun and moon and stars (good, right?) but he STOLE them!

You are quite a free spirit! Good to know you always come back!

No is that word the humans utter so you look at them for a second and then go back to what you were doing in the first place - right?
